Ethical Sourcing & Human Rights

Introduction

Sentinel Procurement Solutions Ltd is committed to conducting business ethically, responsibly, and with respect for internationally recognised human rights.

Although the Company is not currently required to publish a statement under Section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015, it chooses to do so voluntarily as part of its commitment to responsible business practices, ethical procurement and the principles of social accountability.

This statement outlines the actions undertaken to minimise the risk of modern slavery, forced labour, child labour, human trafficking, and other exploitative labour practices within our business operations and supply chains.

This statement has been prepared with reference to:

  • UK Modern Slavery Act 2015
  • SA8000 Social Accountability Standard
  • ILO Core Conventions
  • Universal Declaration of Human Rights
  • United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights
  • Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) Base Code

Organisational Structure

Sentinel Procurement Solutions Ltd operates as a procurement broker and sourcing partner specialising in the procurement of food products, catering equipment, consumables, and related services for organisations operating within:

  • Social Care
  • Healthcare

The Company operates primarily from office-based premises and does not currently:

  • Manufacture products
  • Operate production facilities
  • Employ overseas labour
  • Operate labour agencies

Our role is to identify, evaluate and introduce suppliers capable of meeting client requirements.

  • Bonded labour
  • Child labour
  • Involuntary prison labour

The Company expects all workers within its operations and supply chains to be:

  • Employed voluntarily
  • Paid fairly
  • Treated with dignity and respect
  • Free to leave employment in accordance with contractual arrangements
  • Free from discrimination and harassment
  • Able to raise concerns without fear of retaliation

Risk Assessment

Based on the nature of the Company’s directly controlled operations, the risk of modern slavery within its immediate workforce is assessed as relatively low. However, the Company recognises that no organisation is entirely free from risk and that greater exposure may arise within extended and multi-tier supply chains, particularly in the following areas:

  • Agricultural production
  • Food manufacturing
  • Food processing
  • Overseas sourcing activities
  • Packaging production
  • Logistics and transportation activities

We therefore seek to apply proportionate due diligence when selecting and maintaining supplier relationships.

Due Diligence and Supplier Selection

The Company seeks to work with suppliers that demonstrate a commitment to ethical business practices, responsible employment and internationally recognised human rights.

Supplier assessments are undertaken on a risk-based and proportionate basis. Where relevant, assessments include consideration of:

  • Compliance with applicable employment legislation
  • Modern slavery controls
  • Labour standards
  • Ethical trading commitments
  • Human rights policies
  • Membership of recognised certification schemes
  • SA8000 or equivalent social accountability systems
  • Sedex participation where applicable
  • Participation in, or certification against, recognised third-party assurance programmes

Where a concern or potential non-conformance is identified, the Company will undertake proportionate enquiries and determine whether corrective action, enhanced monitoring, suspension or termination of the relationship is appropriate.

Employment Practices

The Company is committed to ensuring that all employees:

  • Work voluntarily
  • Receive written terms and conditions of employment
  • Are treated fairly and consistently
  • Have access to grievance procedures
  • Are protected from discrimination
  • Are paid in accordance with applicable legal requirements
  • Are not subject to coercion or intimidation

The Company prohibits any disciplinary practice involving:

  • Physical punishment
  • Mental coercion
  • Verbal abuse
  • Humiliation
  • Threats

Reporting Concerns

Employees, suppliers, contractors and business partners are encouraged to report any concerns relating to:

  • Human rights abuses
  • Forced labour
  • Child labour
  • Human trafficking
  • Exploitative labour conditions
  • Other breaches of this statement

Concerns may be reported to an employee’s line manager, the COO, or through the Company’s whistleblowing and grievance arrangements. Reports will be reviewed objectively and handled sensitively and, as far as reasonably practicable, confidentially. The Company will not tolerate retaliation against anyone who raises a genuine concern in good faith.

Training and Awareness

The Company is committed to maintaining awareness of:

  • Modern slavery risks
  • Human rights responsibilities
  • Ethical procurement practices
  • Social accountability requirements

Personnel involved in procurement and supplier approval will receive information, guidance and, where appropriate, training relevant to their responsibilities and the modern slavery risks associated with the Company’s supply chains.

Continuous Improvement

The Company is committed to continually improving its understanding of modern slavery risks and ethical sourcing expectations.

As part of its continuous improvement approach, the Company will periodically consider:

  • Enhancements to supplier questionnaires
  • Improvements to supplier approval processes
  • Additional ethical sourcing information from suppliers
  • Emerging modern slavery risks within its supply chains
  • Changes to relevant legislation and guidance

Responsibility and Governance

The COO has executive responsibility for this statement and for ensuring that appropriate modern slavery controls are maintained. Operational responsibility for supplier due diligence, risk identification, record keeping and the escalation of concerns rests with the relevant procurement and compliance personnel.
